Signs and Symptoms for Nutrient Applications

Any site of inflammation including: - Swelling - Redness - Acute arthritis pain - Ovarian cysts - Sinus infections

Clinical Applications/Research
Bromelain

Extracted from pineapple, bromelain is a protein-digesting (proteolytic) enzyme. It is an excellent anti-inflammatory enzyme (Merck Index, 11th ed. 1989. Merck & Co. Inc., Rahway, NJ, p. 1382) used for post-traumatic injury and swelling. The antiinflammatory effect has been shown to dramatically reduce postoperative swelling. It is helpful in cardiovascular disease by decreasing platelet aggregation and clot formation. Bromelain therapy has become quite popular for use in rheumatoid arthritis to decrease joint inflammation. The journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise (1992;24(l):20-25) reports a study on bromelain, one of the proteolytic enzymes that has therapeutic effects in the treatment of inflammation and soft tissue injuries. Following injury, bromelain significantly increased the maximum muscle force in the treated group, indicating that bromelain can be helpful for a quick recovery from injury. The smooth muscle relaxant properties of bromelain contribute to the documentation for relieving menstrual cramps.

Suggested Dosage

2 capsules 3 times daily; take between meals if possible; during initial inflammation, use as many as 9-12 per day between meals. Bromelain can be irritating on an empty stomach. Take with extra water and small amounts of food if needed.

Contraindications/Toxicology

Bromelain supplementation should be used with caution before or after major surgery. Use caution with patients with pre-ulcerous conditions of the gastro-intestinal tract.
